Nancy Drew and the Mystery of the Flying Saucer

Well I have finally completed my read of the original 57 books in the Nancy Drew Mystery Series, but am pretty much just carrying on until I finish the series. I can knock out a few a day, so am rapidly catching up to my annual target.
This is weird, as in, was the ghostie smoking some seriously serious stuff???
Nan and the squad (including boyfriends) head off to a forest in search of a UFO that seems to appear every 10 years. They meet a cool old geezer called Old Joe (who has a mystery for Nancy as well), there is also a mysterious Indian called Shoso who randomly throws nuts at Bess (hysterical) but actually turns out to be a good guy.
In fact, there are sadly no baddies in this book. Just the mysterious spaceship that creates bad weather and seems to have hallucinogenic properties, or maybe that is just *Dismal Swamp* (cool name) which  is where the aforementioned UFO lands.
One night Nancy and Ned go off to investigate and get *abducted*, yes, this is a thing!!! This whole 10 page sequence is amazing, it's bizarre, it does NOT belong in a Nancy Drew book.
In other news, Old Joe breaks his leg, Bess falls down a ravine, George gets bitten by a snake, the squad fight a forest fire, Nancy and Ned may be contaminated by radiation, and Susan B (stupid name) - Nancy's saddle horse gets burnt by a mysterious substance! All in a weeks work for our Mystery Squad.
The atmosphere of this book was brilliant, and literally fantastic, but the premise of the UFO was not, and the resolution was sloppy. Where were Mulder and Scully? The govt secret agents that appear at the end were boring and far too unsinister (is that a real world)
I did quite enjoy this however, due to it being written well and descriptively, it had shades of Trixie  Belden and the Sasquatch Mystery (whose plot I also disliked) but a better *vibe* in all

Mercedes Lackey: Diana Tregarde Series

So every so often, I reread Mercedes Lackey. Just because she is like a cozy cuppa in front of a fire. No cast amount of concetration needed, just ann enjoyable escape into a fantasy world. The Diana Tregarde series is a forerunner of modern day Urban Fantasy, and while a little dated now (they were written in late 80's-early 90's) they are still pretty decent, though some may find the casula racism and misogyny a little offputting. Take it from whence it came though, Misty is very liberal for the times comparitively speaking. Sadly, the third book ended in a slightly open-ended fashion which implied that the series would continue, but after Mercedes was stalked by a looney-toon who believed that the magic in the series was real, she felt obliged to end it. I believe the guy ended up jailed for life on other charges (paedophilia I think) but the series died a death. Mercedes Lackey: A Bard's Tale

This series was based on the RPG series A Bard's Tale, and the books very much follow a fairly typical RPG style in that a rather mismatched party is collected to fulfil a quest. The books were written in collaboration with Mercedes Lackey and several other authors, and tend to revolve around the character of the Dark Elf Naitachal - ex necromancer and now Bard. He doesn't however, feature in the last book Escape from Roksamur. They are light, fun filled and very fast paced, and while the characters aren't very well developed, they are at least good thumbnail sketches and everyone has a distinct voice. Spoilers and synopses ahead... 1) CASTLE OF DECEPTION (Mercedes Lackey, Josepha Sherman) Good fun old-school swords and sorcery read. Kevin the bardling is looking for excitement, and gets more than he bargains for when the niece of a nearby Lord is seemingly kidnapped. Nancy Drew and the Mystery of the 99 Steps

So I am trying to fill out my Goodreads challenge of 550 books this year and I was a bit behind, so decided to reread all the Nancy Drew books I've been collecting for  the last ten years but haven't actually read since circa 1990! I've just finished Book 3 - or Book 43, OR something considering the weirdness of Nancy publishing... WTF! The numbered books on my shelf are NOT official order. Luckily the ghosties didnt really give a crap about continuity anyway, which  leads us fans to endless hours of fruitless speculation and argument! So, plot: Nan gets a mystery that takes her to France. An old lady is having bad dreams about 99 steps. Whoop Nancy and her squad head off to France after being threatened by villains- quelle surprise? Blah blah, Carson *daddy dear* is dealing with his own personal case of "the frightened financier".
